Matakana Island Proposed Ferry Terminal and Marina

This project was focused on the development of a new ferry terminal and lumber barge access for Matakana Island in Tauranga, New Zealand.

This project was focused on the development of a new ferry terminal and lumber barge access for Matakana Island in Tauranga, New Zealand. The existing jetty could no longer cope with the demand.

The site of the proposed ferry terminal and marina (and logging barge landing) is located on the southern side of Matakana Island, perpendicular to the tidal current regime. This meant that structural intervention was required to maintain the entrance channel. Calibrated hydrodynamic and sediment transport modelling was utilised to develop a sustainable design. Bathymetry survey and instrument deployments were undertaken to develop the calibrated numerical models. Scenario modelling was undertaken to determine the most sustainable entrance channel design.
