Coastal Processes and Erosion Assessment

Assessments were conducted in the Manukau Harbour to develop a clear representation of the natural coastal hazards leading to erosion of the foreshore.

Topographical surveys, wave climate, tides, storm surge, flooding and sea-level rise data, relevant to the sites in Manukau Harbour were generated, collated and reviewed in order to develop a clear representation of the natural coastal hazards leading to erosion of the foreshore and damage to stormwater outlets. This included the calculation of return periods for extreme wave heights and water levels (i.e. the conditions when aggressive erosion occurs). These data were used to determine a recommended minimum level for protection and armour size/type due to inundation levels and wave attack, which incorporates storm surge, climate change and a safety and sea level variability factors.
