New Zealand Coastal Society Conference - Sustainability Award

We went en masse to this year's New Zealand Coastal Society Conference.

We went en masse to this year's New Zealand Coastal Society Conference. We had the honour of sponsoring the new Sustainability Award, aimed at promoting sustainable coastal leadership and action in New Zealand.

We were inspired to put the award in place to encourage and recognise the work that displays leadership and innovation in the application of sustainable strategies.

Abstracts were judged against 3 criteria including:

  • Integration of the 4 well-beings (environmental, social, cultural, economic) for a balanced sustainable outcome
  • Leadership/innovation in the application of a sustainability strategy (eg. holistic systems consideration, minimised resource use, restoration and engagement of kaitiakitanga)
  • Adaptation and social resilience strategies

The inaugural award went to Conrad Pilditch from Waikato University and his team for their part of the Sustainable Seas National Science Challenge that is tackling one of the key environmental issues of cumulative effects and considering the values and vulnerabilities of different aspects of our marine ecosystems.

Chris Battershill accepted the award on Conrad Pilditch's behalf.
