Marina Design at Pilotin Island, Vanuatu

eCoast Marine Consulting and Research was commissioned to detail the design and specifications for a small private marina on the western coast of the privately owned Pilotin Island off of Vanuatu. The key outputs of the project included the identification of mean sea level (MSL) in order to provide a reference height/datum for a construction in terms of both marina depth and breakwater height. This included determination of astronomical tides, wind and wave climate and set-up particularly during extreme events such as storm surges, cyclones, tsunami, and climate change. A long-term wave and wind climate analysis, including extreme return period event analysis in order to determine the rock size for marina breakwater stability, was undertaken. In addition, the consideration of wave penetration into the marina was simulated using a Boussinesq model approach. A comprehensive assessment of impact of the littoral sediment transport system and potential mitigation was also carried out.
